Where does the second leg start and where does it end?
The second leg starts in Dusseldorf and ends after 202 kilometers in Liège, Belgium.

What is the route of the second leg?
The tour starts at the Burgplatz in Dusseldorf. After a trip all the way up to Mettmann and Ratingen, the cyclists pass by Dusseldorf again. The Rhine is crossed via the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke. After 52km, the cyclists leave Dusseldorf and ride through Neuss, Meerbusch, and Kaarst-Büttgen to Korschenbroich. Then, the cyclists arrive in Mönchengladbach via Korschenbroicher Straße (L 381). That’s where the first sprint classification takes place. The Tour continues through Rheydt, Wickrath, and Wickrathberg to Wanlo. There, the world’s best bicycle race leaves our city again after a total of 97.5km. Through Heinsberg, passing by the strip mining in Garzweiler, Düren, Jülich, as well as Titz and Aldenhoven, the cyclists reach Aachen, Alsdorf and Würselen. The leg’s last 51km take place in Belgium. The route’s destination is Liège.

The exact route: Korschenbroicher Straße, Berliner Platz, Rathenaustraße, Bismarckstraße, Hohenzollernstraße, Hermann-Piecq-Allee, Sternstraße, Waldnieler Straße, Hittastraße with panoramic views of Münster and Museum Abteiberg, Speicker Straße, Rheydter Straße, Friedrich-Ebert-Straße, Wilhelm-Schiffer-Straße, Bahnhofstraße, Wickrather Straße, Reststrauch, Gelderner Straße, Poststraße, Trompeterallee, Hochstadenstraße, Beckrather Straße, Wickrathberger Straße, Straße „Auf dem Damm“, Berger Dorfstraße, Straße Stahlenend, Plattenstraße, Heckstraße.

What effect does the sports event have on the traffic?
Because of the cycling event, obstructions to traffic have to be expected during the first July weekend. The route from north to south divides the city into two areas. This has considerable impacts on traffic for pedestrians, cyclists and car drivers, as well as public transportation and residents nearby the route. The regulations for traffic and route security are provided by the A.S.O. and correspond to strict rules and standard of the cities‘ security agencies. The respective city is responsible for security measures. Each participating city has to create its own security concept that is integrated into the overall concept for the Tour de France in Germany. Part of this concept is a traffic security plan, which is prepared by a specialist company that was hired by the city of Dusseldorf. The traffic security plan also only applies for the route in Germany. Part of this concept is – among others – the route’s blockade and signage as well as the specification of which personnel has to be deployed where.

  • There is a no-parking zone on both sides of the route through Mönchengladbach.
  • Therefore, residents are asked to park their cars somewhere else as of the evening of July 1st, the latest.
  • The entire route is completely blocked for several hours.
  • Also all garage blocks, parking lots and driveways along the route are affected by the blockade. These drives are blocked for several hours.
  • As of July 1st, 4 pm, the Bismarckstraße is completely blocked.
  • The exact time of the remaining blockades are released as soon as they are determined.
  • Approximately 120 crossroads will be blocked and several kilometers of fencing will be constructed.
  • The city is currently looking for alternative parking places to be made available to residents free of charge. These parking spaces will be announced.
  • Visitors with campers can park on the Wohnmobilplatz at Wickrather castle.
  • Changes in public transportation schedules will be announced in time.
  • Large areas of Wickrath, Wickrathberg and Wanlo will not be accessible by buses during the big event. For this purpose, the NEW developed a replacement schedule.
  • The feeder roads and exits in Wickrath (A61) will be blocked in both directions.

Recommendation to the visitors:

  • Visitors from out of town, who travel to Mönchengladbach by car should consult the specially designated parking spaces.
  • Visitors from Mönchengladbach should come by foot, bike or public transportation.

What does this mean for security?

  • Fire department, police and medical services are always able to reach blocked or pass blocked areas / routes. Hospitals remain accessible.

How will I be informed?
There is information on the local media and in various publications, which are displayed at the Marketing Gesellschaft Mönchengladbach, Voltastraße 2, town halls, district administrations and other facilities. Residents of the route receive separate information by post. More detailed information is provided in time. In addition, an information hotline will be announced soon.
